Description High quality group work education is the foundation upon which effective group social work practice is built. Group Work Education in the Field by Julianne Wayne and Carol Cohen is part of an ongoing effort to enhance group work education. A resource for field instructors supervising students in group work placements, Group Work Education in the Field starts from the premise that effective group work practice requires that caseworker expertise be supplemented by specific group work knowledge and skills.
Following an overview of group work and its benefits, the authors walk readers through the process of negotiating with an agency to establish a group work assignment. They go on to present types and models of group work practice, illustrated with case scenarios. A variety of different arrangements for providing students with group work experience are explored, as are several approaches to supervising students in group work assignments. Later chapters focus on enhancing student learning through an awareness of learning stages, planning group work assignments, and evaluating students'; work with groups. The text concludes with some directions for continued learning.
